YMCA Sierra Leone: The Valiant Sisters – The Safety Light

Improving women's safety at night.

In Sierra Leone, The Valiant Sisters realised how the simple absence of streetlights had restricted women’s rights and freedom to step out of their houses after sunset. Feeling insecure in the dark was a big barrier for women, preventing them from being fully active in their neighbourhood.

The drive of The Valiant sisters and the innovation of a young electrician created a unique solution in keeping the streets safe after sunset- ‘The safety light project’.

Using Plasma screens of old TV’s they have been able to light up the streets by installing lights. With growing inconsistency in power distribution, they hope to be able to buy generators so that they can continue to ‘light up’ Freetown.
